Great conditions today with temps in the mid teens at the start and upper twenties on the return. Plenty of bright sun most of the day. Started at Gosford gatehouse. Long road walk of approximately 8 miles. Moderate ice under about an inch of fresh powder on the road. After about a mile the road was much better with a hard crust covered by the fresh powder. Bare booted for about the first six miles then switched to snowshoes once the road started heading up. Hard crust with light powder continued all the way to the boundary swath. The swath had a deeper layer of powder with some deeper drifts, but the hard crust was usually no more than 4-6 inches below the surface. Great views to the south and east from the summit. Canister well frozen shut. Thanks Bryan for the info on the Canadian approach. |
